USING KASPERSKY ANTI - VIRUS & INTERNET SECURITY 6.0

DESCRIPTION

Price

Kaspersky is reasonably priced, and even more so if you manage to purchase with one of their special offers:

Installation

Installation of Kaspersky Internet Security went smoothly. I started with the trial version and then entered the license key after the trial expired. This went smoothly and I was able to make a clean transition from trial version to the commercial version.

Configuration

For the sake of determining how Kaspersky works "out of the box" I tried to stick with the default configuration as much as possible.

Ongoing Usage

Kaspersky's strength is it's ability to recognize and destroy any virus the internet sends your way. Since many viruses originate in Russia, they seem to be the most qualified to deal with them since I have never had a virus infection or lost any data using Kaspersky.

I did run into a bug today though. When I started my laptop, the MS Security center told me that my virus protection was disabled. Upon opening Kaspersky, I saw a message telling me that there were too many users with my license key, even though I was the only one and the key is valid. It went away though, and Kaspersky resumed function until it started to crash.

It was easy to fix because there was a Technical Support link built right into the program that took me straight to the relevant FAQ for my problem. I followed the well documented and easy to follow fix, and was back in business within 5 minutes.

Kaspersky Major Areas of Protection

File Anti Virus

Kaspersky's file anti-virus protection is like having your own food taster. It is a last line of defense that protects your computer even if a virus has managed to infect your computer. When files are accessed (you open a file, for example), Kaspersky does a quick scan to check for virus infection and prevent it from executing if found.

Anti-Hacker

Kaspersky's Anti-Hacker is a feature you don't realize how useful it is until you see it go to work. Anti-Hacker monitors tcp and udp ports for suspicious activity, such as somebody trying to gain access to your system. In many cases, the somebody is another infected PC that is scanning the internet for systems vulnerable to it's particular attack. For example, here are some notifications I received about attempts to gain access to my computer:

1/14/2007 11:32:48 PM Intrusion.Win.MSSQL.worm.Helkern 61.128.211.212 UDP 1434
1/14/2007 11:53:49 PM Intrusion.Win.MSSQL.worm.Helkern 69.13.50.80 UDP 1434
1/15/2007 6:48:54 AM Intrusion.Win.MSSQL.worm.Helkern 222.88.253.69 UDP 1434

Kaspersky is effectively fighting off Helkern, a particularly nasty virus infecting MSSQL 2000 Server (as usual).
